OET Exams

  • Designed for healthcare professionals
  • Accepted worldwide: US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and more
  • Consists of 4 Parts – Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking

OET Exam Pattern

Listening
  • Approximately 40 minutes
  • Three parts in the sub-test
  • 42 questions to answer in total
  • Part A accounts for 24 marks, Part B accounts for 6 marks, and Part C accounts for 12 marks.
  • For Part A, you must write your answers in the space provided in the question booklet.
  • For Part B and Part C, you must shade the lozenge next to the appropriate answer.
  • Answers written elsewhere in your booklet will not be marked.
  • A range of accents are used across all three parts to reflect the global nature of the healthcare workforce.
  • The main accents are: Australian, British, American, with other accents including New Zealand, Irish, Canadian, South African, etc.
Reading
  • 60 minutes
  • Three parts in the sub-test
  • 42 questions to answer in total
  • Part A accounts for 20 marks, Part B accounts for 6 marks, and Part C accounts for 16 marks.
  • In Part A you should write your answers clearly in the spaces given in the question booklet.
  • In Part B and Part C, you must shade the circle next to the appropriate answer.
  • Answers written elsewhere in your booklet will not be marked.
Writing
  • 45 mins in duration
  • Formal letter on a profession-specific matter using case notes
  • Marked by OET assessors using six assessment criteria
  • Two OET assessors use the official OET Writing criteria to assess your performance.
Speaking
  • Approximately 20 minutes
  • Two profession-specific roleplays (5 mins each)
  • Marked by OET assessors using official assessment criteria
  • The Speaking sub-test is recorded and the audio is assessed by two official OET assessors using the official OET Linguistic and Clinical Communication Criteria.
